This book discusses both wild and domestic rabbits and is filled with very appealing full color photos. I was pleased to see Rabbits discourages pet shop purchases of rabbits and suggests rescue groups as a good option when looking for a new pet. Unlike many beginner rabbit books, this one talks about the need to spay and neuter pet bunnies, both to improve the animals' long-term health and prevent unwanted breeding. "It isn't a good idea to breed from your pet rabbits because there are already too many unwanted rabbits," the authors suggest, a tip I'm sure all of the bunnies in animal shelters can vouch for. (Rabbits are the 3rd most common species surrendered to shelters in the U.S.) The only downside to this book is its acceptance of outdoor hutches as housing for pet rabbits, a notion that's been all but ousted by the rabbit rescue community. The author does not seem to differentiate between outdoor vs. indoor hutch, presenting both as equally good. This book includes an afterward for the adults who will be taking most of the responsibility for a new family pet.

An extremely interesting read for those that find rabbits (or even animals' general place in society) fascinating. I wish I could give it 4 stars but at different points throughout the book (especially in the chapters dealing with rabbits' portrayals throughout history) it began to read like an uninspired college paper, full of boring lists of source material and quotes or repetitive points that don't end up amounting to much of a point - at least not an insightful one. The sections on the morphology, behavior, and uses of rabbits, however, were very well written and raised interesting points and observations. A solid book overall but definitely one that rabbit lovers will find particularly engrossing.
