An intriguing cover, pun title, and 25¢ book sale at Marissa's Books today had me give this a shot. And I was engaged for a while. Unfortunately, by the halfway point it becomes clear that the authors are not interested in being at all original and the heroine is still in denial about magic even as she's has clearly cast spells and encountered a magic book. Magic Book, people! How do you not examine a magic book?!? When I stopped Ye Olde Magyk Booke had been relegated to under her bed for three weeks and she was still too much a coward to open it again (it had not done anything more threatening than answering a perfectly normal question). So yeah, no thanks. And to be clear, there's some originality here. I liked the parental setup and there was potential in the town. And someone closer to the intended audience would probably have lots more patience than I did. It's not awful, is all I'm saying. So two stars.

2019 me: This book is far from perfect. Does it deserve 4 stars? I don’t know but I have such nostalgia in how I bought it so maybe that bro ha something to the rating. Some parts I rolled my eyes (I mean main character is 14...) and I only remembered the ending closer to the end, even after reading this for a 4th time. Book 1 of my 2017 Re-reads To be honest going into this I didn't remember the plot whatsoever. I remember buying this based on the clever title in some random bookstore. I know I loved this back then but it's no longer five stars for me. It's still just as fluffy as I remember (the only thing about this book I do remember) and the magic/ witch aspect still makes me happy, also all those shop titles get me too.
