| Review # 1 was written on 2018-07-10 00:00:00 Cristian Rl Risdon This book makes no mention of Irish slaves or Irish indentured servants in America. That is what I am interested in researching…the reason I chose to read this book. But here are some interesting facts concerning early slavery in this book. Almost all of Europe in the 1400’s had domestic slaves called serfs. The serf was chained to his district and predestined to his profession. Saint Brandan in 550 A.D. left Ireland headed west in search for “the Promised Land” but never returned. (p.20) Some credit him as the first European to discover the new world. The first Irish settlers in the “New World” were 20,000 certain Catholic patriots banished by Oliver Cromwell to Barbados in 1649. (p.21) During the restoration of King Charles II in 1660, There was no surplus population of Irish to worry about, but later when William & Mary reigned, 100,000 Irish were driven out of the country—many sent to America. (p. 24) |
