Review # 1 was written on 2017-01-08 00:00:00 JORDAN Fiscus Many years ago, my grandparents gave me a book by John D Niles called Beowulf The Poem and Its Tradition. Since then, Niles became one of my favourite authors and I've purchased every book he's released. All that I was missing was a few obscure papers. I was overjoyed to find this collection of his papers on heroic poetry and promptly got a copy. The book collects his papers on Beowulf, Maldon, Widsith and the goths, heroic poetry and geography, Cædmon and oral poetry. The final chapter is a spirited defence of Seamus Heaney's Beowulf translation, not even John Niles can convince me to like Heaney's translation.

Review # 2 was written on 2019-10-20 00:00:00 Aaron Wright Re-reading this excellent work of Tolkien scholarship for a final paper I am working on for the Fantasy Before and After Tolkien course. Since the last time I read it I actually met and spoke to the author!
