Review # 1 was written on 2020-12-23 00:00:00 Andrew Strates Excellent study of disasters from a variety of cultural and intellectual perspectives. Not merely a policy book, the analysis ties the book into capitalism (disaster capitalism) and politics in a convincing way. |
Review # 2 was written on 2013-03-26 00:00:00 Seb Brown Parts of this book were really good -- describing how racism goes "underground" when social norms and laws make overt racism less acceptable. However, he doesn't follow through on examining subtle or disguised racism. Instead, he spends much of the book detailing examples of people crying wolf in high publicized cases (Tawana Brawley, for instance). The beginning and conclusion have wonderful gems. Unfortunately, the middle isn't worth it. |
