A very useful book on raising poultry even if it was written a century ago. Interesting commentary on the work ethic of poultry farmers of the time. My favorite quote: "To those who are qualified for the work poultry keeping offers a good living, but to the idle, the thriftless, or the pleasure seekers of this holiday-making age, it offers more desolate prospects than any other trade or profession. In this business, nothing but dogged determination will enable the beginner to climb the rugged, precipitous path to success, and anyone who is lacking in this essential, or who is afraid of hard, continuous work, will save himself the obloquy of failure by choosing some other field in which to exercise his powers." Wisdom for the ages there. Good even for our own "holiday-making age".

A good book on selecting hens and cocks for selective breeding for desired traits such as egg production, dual, meat, etc... I did not use all of the techniques i.e. prepotency techniques since that has been proven to be not very effective. However, I extenstively used capacity, type, and condition techniques outlined in thr book. Those techniques have proven extremely helpful on my flock breeding. I highly recomend this book in conjunction with "Mating and Breeding Poultry" by Harry M. Lamon if you are new to poultry breeding.
