This would have been a great introduction to BASIC back in the day; the author attempts to keep the introduction simple enough to be universal, and provides warnings when it isn’t, down to having to take care about the different spacing around numeric variables depending on the dialect, a problem that still hits today when typing in BASIC programs. It’s a breezy style filled with public domain art. And era-specific jokes: TAB(), the low calorie function! And can you guess the joke hidden in this code snippet? FOR J=1 TO 8:PRINT CHR$(7):NEXT J Also interesting is how obscure facts often seem to bubble up multiple times. I was reading a few days ago in an old magazine about how LET, oddly, speeds up program execution on Radio Shack’s Level I BASIC. Leaving it out saves memory but is slower. Brown mentions this as well, and that it applies to most if not all BASIC dialects, not just the TRS-80. It would have been a useful book, and still probably would be if someone wanted to learn BASIC. It covers all the core functions of the language; by the end the student will be able to deal a hand of poker, a simple but not trivial task.

Published in 1971, this series is a comprehensive overview of many aspects of photography. Only the titles specific to equipment; The Camera; Light and Film; and The Print are a bit outdated, but not completely for the same principles still apply such as shutter speed, depth of field, etc. By far, a great series for any would be serious photographer even today.
