Review # 1 was written on 2011-07-21 00:00:00 Millicent Sullivan This children's picture is about Edna St. Vincent Millay, a poet who lived in New York City in the early 1900's, and it is written in first-person. It tells about her living in the city, with many other writers and artists, when women's fashions are becoming popular and they are given the right to vote. The poem "Recuerdo", which means "remember" is one of her most famous, and this book tells the story of what *might* have happened that night that she and her friend wanted to remember. They board a ferry that goes back and forth, back and forth, from Manhattan to Staten Island. They decide to get off on the Island and climb to the top, where they talked through the night and then watched the sunrise. On the way home, the gave fruit and money to a women on the corner. Enjoying the moments, she wrote this poem for her friend. Interesting book! I had heard of Edna St. Vincent Millay, but have never read any of her works. This little picture book was enlightening as to the time period in which she lived, as well as background information about one of her most famous poems. I liked the first-person style from Mr. Burleigh, quite a change from his normal writing style. The illustrations look like watercolors and show what New York City would have been decades ago. |
