When I want quick facts about a person or subject, I often browse for young adult books and usually find excellent resources. This is a fine example of its genre. Written in simple language, A Home in the Heart does a great job of introducing an important, complex writer and social activist. The adult reader will find rich text between the lines, and adolescents--particularly Latinas or Chicanas--will find hope, affirmation, and inspiration. I'll have the privilege soon of spending some time with Ms. Cisneros, and this book gave me what I needed--enough background, hopefully, to make her feel at home.

I'm not a big fan of biographies, especially ones written for children or teens. However, for what I used it for, this book was excellent: it gave a good overview of Cisneros's life and included so nice quotes and excerpts from her speeches and interviews. At times, the narrative seemed to jump around, and several major events did not have years attached, but the chronology helped to fill in those gaps.
