An informative book with eye catching pictures and various fonts, children should gravitate towards it with no problem. Some illustrations are drawings and others are photographs. There is also side-bars of "Did You Know?" and "X-Ray Vision - See What Happens Next!" I would recommend this book for children in grades 3 - 7.

Belying its title, Fun Facts about Alligators offers K-2 readers a basic introduction to alligators without providing any fascinating facts about the species. One of six titles in Enslow's I Like REPTILES and AMPHIBIANS! series, the book's only reference to reptiles is a two line note on the index/credit page that provides a brief definition of each order and list of animals. Presented in a question and answer format, a full page of text opposes a colorful double-framed photograph that complements the information presented and includes a one line picture caption. Minimal topic information, presented in overly simplistic language (i.e. little alligators, big alligators, great big alligators rather than young or adult), may serve to confuse young readers, requiring them to infer additional information from photographs (i.e. where alligators make their nests). A labeled diagram of an alligator identifies basic anatomical features common to most animals (i.e. mouth, leg), omits species specific characteristics (i.e. scales) and neglects scientific terminology (i.e. nose rather than snout). Bredeson's statement, "Most alligators live in South America," inaccurately identifies the range of alligators which encompasses North America and China, not South America. Placed within the first pages of the book, the "Words to Know" section, may be more accessible for young readers. Additional text features include a table of contents, index, life cycle page, map, and a "Learn More" section that provides a short list of books for further reading and related web sites. K-2 students may find the suggested San Diego Zoo web page puzzling since its primary focus is crocodiles, not alligators. Although the book's design may appeal to elementary readers, the dearth of information, inaccuracies and controlled vocabulary make this an avoidable acquisition. Fun Facts About Alligators by Carmen Bredeson series--I Like REPTILES and AMPHIBIANS! Enslow Publishers, Inc. ISBN: 978-0-7660-2786-2 $21.26
