When thinking of children's nonfiction books, this one stands out to be one in which every child should read when wanting to know more about the westward expansion. It starts off explaining the US when we first began, back when we only had thirteen colonies and takes us on an adventure through the Revolutionary War, the expansion beyond the appalachians, the Louisiana Purchase, all the way to the west with Sacagawea and the rest of the Native Americans. The tragic tails of the Trail of Tears and Oregon Trail and the adventures of Davy Crocket and Buffalo Bill end us up in 1890 with all the land to the west having been explored. This book uses many different aspects of a non-fiction book with tables, charts, headings, captions, pictures and even a glossary for those trickier words. The book I would pair this with would be Soft Rain by Corneila Cornelissen which is about a 9 year old Cherokee Indian girl who is forced to move west with her mother and only the littlest things they could pack along with them. This story tells the tale of a little girl and her mother who travel along the tragic Trail of Tears. I would pair this with The Westward Expansion because one of the sections in this book talks about the Trail of Tears and the effects the expansion had on any and all Native Americans during that time. This allows the information in the non-fiction book to come to life and make any child realize the tragedies they faced.

This book is about the Westward Expansion. I liked this book because its about people moving west. I learned that $15 million would cost $313 million today. When a territory had 60,000 people it could become a state. The Westward Expansion was a hard time but in the end it got them more land and more space, but the Trail of Tears makes me sad.
