5* text 1* photos Squirt read this to me under protest, Loud protest. "Mom! I HATE spiders!!" But we are doing school from home now ( under protest, too), and learning about spiders is part of the curriculum. Squirt read the book well, it had new words like "moult", and "sac", and the information was startling. For instance - I loved this gruesome bit - spiderlings often eat the dead body of their mother before they go off on their spider-silk streamers into the great blue yonder. Squirt was grossed out, but fascinated. The photos were so close-up and freaky - not beautiful ones, let me tell you, that Squirt actually screamed as I turned one page. I told him that he doesn't have to like spiders, but he should appreciate how amazing they are, and how brave the little babies are to sky-dive their way through the world. It was an entertaining read, that's for sure. Squirt wants me to give the book only 1 star, but I thought we learned a ton.

It's fun to learn about animal life cycles beyond the few that are so well known. This is a simple informational text that explains how spiders hatch and grow.
