Review # 1 was written on 2018-06-03 00:00:00 John Cartelli A great, detailed book about the life and times of Jackson Pollock. This book is a timeline of his life and what was happening in both the art world and the rest of the world at this time. A great resource for art history in the classroom. |
Review # 2 was written on 2016-02-16 00:00:00 Donna Johnson Another disappointment. I am VERY interested in this artist and his works, so I wanted to read something about him, but could not find anything except for this book. I thought that it might be appropriate for at least superficial acquantance with Pollock and I liked the way it presents the material. You read a small chapter about a certain period from Pollock's life, look at a couple of photographs, learn something associated in the enclosed "encyclopedic" inserts, and see one of two of exemplary works from this period. Cool structure, isn't it? Sadly, but the narration was too bleak and simplistic for me, and I actually did not learn anything about Pollock as a personality. The book describes his life as if in a bad school textbook -- with dates and events (such exhibition in such gallery in such year, and so on), but without the creative and unique individuality behind them and his ideas. I might expect such art book written in 1960s, for example, but not in 2003! So I still hope to find an interesting book about Jackson Pollock. |
