Apparently, as a parent, I need to prepare my two year old for doctor and dentist visits. Unfortunately, it’s not easy to come by books about going to the dentist. So, here we are. The book feels decidedly 1980s with overly-excited siblings and a floppy bunny that the reader cannot seem to shake throughout the story. However, other than that, the author presents a pretty straightforward story complete with checking in at reception and checking for cavities. I would probably leave out Sarah’s cavity section or replace it with a cleaning or fluoride treatment, but maybe Penny Smith has a cavity fetish. No judgement. As for my daughter, she found the plaque picker scary at first but seems to be getting used to it. So, I guess the book is working. We’ll find out that answer whenever we work up the nerve to take her to the pediatric dentist.

This would be a great non-fiction book to read to children who might be nervous about going to the dentist as it shows what they will experience and the equipment they might see. It also links to studying teeth in science as well as how to look after our teeth and healthy eating. It would also be good to read if a dentist came in to give a talk (this happened in my SBT1 school) so children knew a bit more about their role.
