Review # 1 was written on 2012-09-09 00:00:00 Ckc Lai I thought this was a fascinating and comprehensive read. While the only other reviewer of this book found it hard to follow, I found it was rather clearly discussed from the perspective of someone who is not a trained linguist. The investigations into various intonations and their implication in a variety of languages was discussed mainly in technical detail and through anecdotal reference, while not entirely ignoring the philosophical and comparative implications of these different implementations of sonic semantics. |
Review # 2 was written on 2018-12-14 00:00:00 Diego Lopes I liked the idea of this book - learning how prosody adds meaning to speech - but the reality of it was that it was quite hard to follow. The ideas could have been developed in a much clearer fashion. It sometimes feels like a collection of papers that were strung into a book. |
