As a high school teen I recall The Cardinal Sins by Andrew Greeley as being one of the raciest books in my mother's giant library stack. It wasn't the silky blood red robe practically falling off and showing the bum of the creamy nude woman on the cover. I was used to my mother's book stack containing novels with jacket art that seemed, at least to me at the time, a little racy. A lot of the books she read had some poor woman desperately looking over her shoulder from the castle she was fleeing, her plump cleavage bursting from the burgeoning crisscrosses of ribbon so, it wasn't that, it was the shock that the author was a PRIEST! GASP! I never forgot Andrew Greeley's name after that and never thought of him as anything but the priest who controversially wrote books containing sex. I never really thought of the priest part until the other day at the library where his Great Mysteries book was featured in a display. I immediately recognized the author and recalled the controversy years ago regarding The Cardinal Sins and grabbed the book to see what the man had to say. Boy, am I glad. As a person who struggles with religious beliefs this is truly a beautiful book. For me it was a beautiful read about what I think religion should be all about and how people should act and what they should do on a daily basis to make this world worth living in. It was spiritually lifting and have to say life changing. It is clear in explanation and full of the realities of life, no sugar coating. But once Father Greeley breaks down all the sucky-ness of life, he turns around and gives you hope but it is in your hands to accept the beautiful gift of hope. I look forward to reading this book over and over and to seek out more of Andrew Greeley's non fiction works. And maybe one or two of his fiction. They always did look like fun reading....;)

Fr Greeley attempts to peel away the stale language around various Catholic doctrine and give a fresh look at those doctrines and how they apply to modern life. I found some of his thoughts to be useful and others to strike me as close to heresy but they did get me to approach known doctrine with fresh eyes.
