I really loved reading this book. It helped me fill in many blanks in my understanding of German philosophy after Kant and it helped me understand something about the stage setting for the emergence of existentialism. The chapter on Jacobi and nihilism was especially enjoyable for me, because it gave me perspective on how Jacobi focused the interests and inquiries of post Kantian German philosophers on the question of how our lives could ultimately be meaningful in view of our forbidden access to the divine. The story about Reinhold's promotional efforts in support of Kant's philosophy was also especially enjoyable. Reinhold and Jacobi struck me as especially earnest thinkers in contrast with Hegel in his more obscure moments.
