Review # 1 was written on 2014-11-18 00:00:00 Sara Friedman This is the book I would hand someone who has just realized his/her privilege and wants to do more. This is the book I would go to when confronted with a white male sophomore who doesn't see his white or male privileges. This is the book I cite when looking for references on effective education practices. I think I can safely call this the go-to all-around excellent privilege education book for privileged people. It puts it out there gently. To be fair, that means it does not go far enough, but it is a good starter. |
Review # 2 was written on 2019-01-16 00:00:00 Kimberly Burek This book is intended for people who work as social justice educators, but I think is extremely helpful interpersonally as well. She focuses on how people develop constructive identities as allies and how you can engage in bystander intervention. The appendix also has educational resources. She covers privilege in a very general way, but draws from a lot of specific examples and research. It is also useful in understanding and reflecting on how your identity as an ally has developed (imo). |
