Review # 1 was written on 2011-06-16 00:00:00 Alan Mcculloch This is a magnificent book for those who already have their history pretty straight about the "Wars of the Roses" (of course, not called that at the time, but rather a Victorian romantic fiction). The societal wars going on between York and Lancaster were far nastier, albeit intermittent. It's eery to read these wonderful letters from various members of the Paston Family and realize how a large dynastic family of near-aristocrats thought, worked, married, and fought in the late Middle Ages. Once you've got a handle on the big picture, you'll enjoy it very much as a classic source. |
Review # 2 was written on 2013-07-30 00:00:00 Kumar Kusum Broken down by batched decades, the correspondence of Rebecca West, with very well researched footnotes. I've found, very often, with famous writers, when they know they are writing to...well...anyone...they are also writing for posterity, and at times her correspondence does have that stiffness to it. But she can be remarkably blunt--about her husband her her son born out of wedlock to H.G. Wells when she was quite young...as she put it "the pursued "this year's writer's ingénue." |
