The handful of Dickinson poems I read in high school didn't wow me, and I never had to read any in college, so I've just assumed most of my adult life that I didn't care for Dickinson much. I got this book almost twenty years ago from my in-laws, and I never read it. I think I was not only disinterested in Dickinson but worried that the religious content would be too overt. I was wrong on both counts. The author is a Catholic priest, and that certainly informs his writing, but he talks about God in very general terms and mentions mosques and synagogues as sites of prayer, so it reads to me as being very pan-religious. Considering everything that's going on right now, I actually found reading this book more than a little comforting. A lot of it is about being intentional in existence and observing nature and the value of doubt and questioning. And now I know that I'd like to read Dickinson!

This is the book to read if you want to know about Emily Dickinson's religious imagination. She was not a nonbeliever. She called everything into question seeking for the truth.
