Review # 1 was written on 2016-09-23 00:00:00 virginia frazer I discovered Christopher Reid by accident in a library eight years ago, and since then I've basically thought of him as the unblemishable demi-god of poetry. He can do no wrong. I swear! While most great writers might produce two or three truly exquisite poems in their lifetime, Reid churns them out like he's jotting a shopping list. So it's kind of a relief that this collection is a bit more hit-and-miss than his others. There's the odd duff poem. Some quirky experimentation with character. Not everything resonates, and that's ok. It's a bit exhausting, to be honest, when Reid pierces your soul with every single line. So it's nice this time to skim as well as savour. And of course there are some sublime pieces tucked in here, too, so don't think he's flunking all of a sudden. |
