A fairly standard and basic outline of the general structure of Fichte's thought, with a focus on his earlier Jena writings, and specifically the theme of subjectivity or Ichheit. While useful for an entry level understanding of Fichte, the work really shows its age, and would benefit from a new edition which takes into account some of the great work that has been done concerning Fichte's thought over the last 30 years or so. Perhaps the greatest boon of this book is the detailed comparison that Neuhouser makes throughout between Fichte's thought and that of Kant. The level of detail that went into this aspect of the work is appreciable in itself.

Remarkably concise and clear--especially interesting in terms of relating Kant's theory of apperception and his (in)ability to find a unitary structure for theoretical and practical reason to Reinhold and Fichte's philosophical concerns.
