A wonderful find. As the title indicates, this book gives short biographies of women in chemistry. Often, I read about one influential woman, and hunted down more details from other sources. The style is a little dated, as the book was originally published in 1998, but I didn't mind at all. It was good to read discussion about why women were able to research certain subjects and not others. It appears that, historically, men preferred safe subjects which allowed them to be successful. Women were left to study new areas of study, such as crystallography, radioactivity and biochemistry, for they were 'new, uncharted interdisciplinary areas where success and glory were uncertain'.

Oakeshott does an original evaluation of Hobbes political philosophy. As ever, his analysis is fascinating and one of the greatest essayists ever lives up to his usual high standards. The subject is also novel and its refreshing for Hobbes to be discussed in such an open-minded manner. Where the book does go flat a little bit is in the lack of clear theses underpinning the essays, a comviction in what was written, and the style is a little flat, notwithstanding the merits of the author. A really great book to understand Hobbes, however.
