This is one of the best books of John Dewey's intellectual life I have ever read. It is put together in such a way that it refutes those who claim Dewey did not have a "system." Rockefeller shows how Dewey's early religious influence and Hegelian idealism was still a part of his writings when he finally ended up embracing empirical naturalism as his intellectual life continued to grow.
