I was impressed by the presentation of historical context and content in this collection. The professional, well-composed and reasoned essays in this book significantly expanded my understanding of the novel in terms of the way it was shaped by and nested itself into the surrounding culture, as well as stylistic details I had never noticed. There was even this one innovative (to me at least) trick I picked up from one of the essays, where two characters were contrasted by substituting them and deciding if one character could meet the conditions that would allow them to say what the other said. Highly recommended to anybody who likes Fitzgerald and Gatsby and wants to find out some more about it, as well as any scholar doing relevant research.

My favorite of the bunch was the Kenneth Eble essay re Great American Novel. I also liked the zest tone of Garrett's closing piece.
