Review # 1 was written on 2017-04-03 00:00:00 Tom Yeo Even 20 years after its first publication (in 1997, in a Dutch language version) this remains a cornerstone of every wine lover's library. The book is supremely well produced and attractively designed. Its stylish but compact layout, elegant typography, crystal clear maps, and first rate photography have aged remarkably well, very much reflecting the character of the distinguished wines discussed between the book's covers. Its contents do not shed light on recent developments in the Bordeaux and for an up to date discussion of vintages one obviously needs to look elsewhere. However, Michael Broadbent's essays that introduce major appelations remain as fresh and informative as if they were written yesterday. And Hubrecht Duijker's scrupulous inventory of hundreds of chateaux remains a treasure trove of interesting factoids and 'Geheimtips' for the enthusiast. The book is sadly out of print but can be picked up from antiquarian sources quite easily. |
Review # 2 was written on 2019-12-19 00:00:00 Ralph Kennington everything I wanted to know about wines from Bordeaux and more. He's my wine guru. |
