Review # 1 was written on 2018-12-26 00:00:00 Peter J. Eagan A good overall introduction of the transformation of Bengal under the first years under the East India company rule. The book covers an enormous range of subjects, but as a trade-off, some of these not so well. The political and economic transformation are given extensive treatment, but other significant aspects, religion, education or social changes, are treated rather superficially. The study looks a bit dated too, and some important modern research has advanced our understanding, on issues such as legal environment, gender, free trade debate, position of the peasants in society etc, quite significantly. However, this is still a good quick introduction to the subject, though one must read this with a critical eye. |
