Review # 1 was written on 2014-10-26 00:00:00 Larry Hurst This was a great book, very detailed and well-written, but easy to understand too. It was written in the 1920s, and it focuses on the Druids and their philosophy, as well as Emanuel Swedenborg's "science of correspondences". It's the best book about Druids I've read so far, and includes things like the source of Druidic philosophy and its common origin with other traditions, the Druidic "church" and the 4 churches that classify the spiritual ages of the world into categories based on humanity's level of enlightenment, the symbolism in Druid outfits and stone circles, their idea of God and the soul and how it relates to both Plato and Christianity, their ideas about the mind and knowledge, the preservation of Druidic teachings (in writing and in poetry), and a comparison of Druidism and Christianity (especially how Christianity is based on the Druids' ideas about God and morals through Plato and Pythagoras). I liked how the author wasn't afraid of disagreeing with other writers, both ancient and modern and religious, and he certainly points out many faults in how Christianity is interpreted. The only thing I didn't like about this book was how much attention was given to how people perceived religion through their own biases, and trying to convince us that the Druids were not "wild uneducated heathens". I think it would have been enough to show their philosophy and ways of life, but it was still a great book with a sort of mystical feel to it, as if you should be reading this by moonlight within a stone circle. I wish this author wrote other books, but I've only found this one so far, by chance at the library at the university I go to.
