Review # 1 was written on 2016-09-13 00:00:00 Jason Jackson Meh. Interesting but not all that illuminating. I already knew her works had a lot of autobiographical content. Interesting division of her work into three or four broad categories, but matches perhaps more of her being Jewish than is entirely warranted.

Deracination is simply a specialised form of isolation, and this is Brookner's theme.Her beautiful people are like a false syllogism made true: they are beautiful because they are rapaciously selfish, and they are rapaciously selfish because they are beautiful.On the subjest of money:this is haute bourgeoisie, clanking with lagacies. Etiolated, barely visible widows move across the endless expanses of their Knightsbridge flata, so gorged with abtruse spiritual vice, that they neither eat nor drink.Finally, on the subject of gross obscenity: nobody was right for reviewing Houellebecq's 'Platforme', which I feel she did to perfection, taking off his tone for the sake of exactitude and as her own tribute.Cheryl Malcolm did the definitive biography of this lonely, frustrated, and deeply troubled writer. She knew how deracination could be so disabling and crippling to someone as vulnerable as Anita Brookner revealed to the world in her coruscating, yet perfectly constructed sentenses. She spoke exactly as she wrote--perfect grammar, and perfect sentences.
