This book presents an interesting approach to exemplar-based machine learning, with examples of applications in linguistics. AM is designed to model and predict variable phenomena in human behavior; sample applications have been predicting whether we say "a" or "an", in which case there is a rule which English speakers sometimes 'accidentally' break; predicting English and Russian stress, which seemingly have no rules or have so many rules and exceptions that they are impossible to enumerate; predicting devoicing in Japanese; predicting greetings in Arabic; and the list goes on. AM works by creating supracontexts and subcontexts, or large Venn diagrams which map out the similarities and differences between an exemplar and an item with an unknown outcome. Homogeneous supracontexts, ones that contain sub-contexts that behave the same way as it does, are then selected. Each exemplar has a pointer that points to each other exemplar, and one of the pointers within a homogeneous supracontext is selected at random. Thus, the probability of an outcome can be predicted based on the number of pointers to each data item with that outcome divided by the total number of pointers. The book is a bit dry and sometimes difficult to understand, and also needs updating, so I give it four stars.
