Not a well-written review, by any means, but this book has a touching narrative; very -diary of a journalist- style and its honesty made me humble. This is a collection of personal accounts and memories of the factory life for women (mostly) and how everything changed, and it is not as clear-cut as to be said as "for the better". This book certainly is not prose or poetry, it is rough and has gaps, stops, and starts, but I think that is where it won me over. It was like listening to my own relatives talk about their youth, their trials and tribulations and stories of walking both ways in the snow, up hill to get to school (only in the context of Japanese culture). There are times when the Story tells must stop because it is too much for one day, or it is time to eat and the journalist describes the meal that was made for them, which I liked, again, it made it real to me. It is a must read for understanding the industrialization history of Japan, and I can proudly say that no, ha-ha, this book was not assigned to read, or even suggested, which I guess makes it more endearing as a gem of a book, found in a pile of boring history books,-of which I have many (mostly about US history though lol).

Great look back at 1980s fabric patterns. Some awesome - and some not so awesome!
