Review # 1 was written on 2014-02-26 00:00:00 Kiki Mvknll A rather dry, ironically unpoetic version of a fascinating story that could have used some better organizing. Say, a narrative section, a business/financials section, and an enological section. Instead there are brief glimpses of interesting people and activities, broken up by swaths of figures and dates. There is also a tendency to meander back and forth in time, rather than maintaining a chronological progression (suggested by the chapters divided into historical periods), so it can be confusing whether or not one has read a particular, similar-sounding passage. However, I believe this is in fact a dissertation, written by an academic for academic readers, rather than for a popular audience, and in that light it certainly is successful. The subject matter is interesting enough that I'll look forward to reading more about the period and region at a later date. |
Review # 2 was written on 2011-10-20 00:00:00 John Davis Fundamental wine enthusiast reading about Zinfandel in California and its origins. Also covers history of Ridge Vineyards and other old vines sources. Includes several tips for wine tasting and keeping standards objective. My copy is heavily annotated, highlighted, and worn, loaned to many. There are more recent books, with greater scientific results, but none more interesting to read. |
