I give it one more star than Ian Watt's book because he doesn't presume to speak for the entire universe when he's only talking about 18th Century England. I appreciate the specificity. That said, my class (no, I would not pick up this book on my own) agrees that he has a good I'm-gonna-take-Ian-Watt-down argument in the last chapter and introduction and a lot of the middle is random academic I'm-writing-a-book-and-need-to-extend-my-pages filler.

This was written by my favorite college professor. An invaluable read if you are interested in the English novel.
