A coffee table book I read in the place where I am staying in Kona, Hawaii (on the Big Island). As a first time visitor I am impressed with the diversity here: Desert, rainforest, mountains/volcano, agriculture. I grew up in the midwest and have seen my share of chickens, but inside of the first day had seen a dozen roosters roaming about. It's a tourist haven, of course, and that's why I am here, to body surf, snorkel--those sea turtles! An octopus, score!--see the volcano and read about and view all of those tragic stories from the still recent eruptions, see waterfalls, the Botanical Garden, but also to get a sense of the history, the sacred traditions here. My first luau gave me some of the latter. This book captures the range of places in Hawaii, with a good introduction by Paul Theroux, but its focus is primarily on architecture, so it feels slightly empty to me to see all these photographs without what seemed to me what is more central, the natural habitats, the people, its spiritual core.

Read this more for RLS source material on Hawaii at the end of the 19th Century, not for an organized history or travelogue of Hawaii.
