Review # 1 was written on 2017-10-23 00:00:00 Tommy Johnston In the introduction to this book, the authors state that they wanted to cover a few hundred women in a satisfactory manner, rather than rushing past the potential thousand(s) they could include. Unfortunately, the level of detail in most of these entries falls into the very trap they were trying to avoid. The book is alphabetized and further sorted by area of achievement, which means there is no sense of continuity, culture or connection between them ... which is a shame, considering several of these women cross paths, inspire each other and are even related. Other entries make references to places, people and organizations as if the reader should know their significance. Combine that with the understandable tendency to include cities of residence, travel, and multiple marriages, and the book sometimes feels like a list of names. I've given this two stars because it is a good starting reference if one is looking for a brief explanation of a specific female historical figure. It works better as a reference book than a reading book. |
Review # 2 was written on 2012-08-14 00:00:00 Nikole Juart If you like geeky food history lit you'll like this. It's academia-type writing so be warned. That said, I loved it. |
