Always love when I find a new fact in one of these mini-biographies that I have not read before (since most of them seem to hold the same facts) this one had a few I was unaware of. For example I had never read the Mr. Jefferson started a small nail factory on his plantation that was run by several of his teenage slaves. Who knew? The book had a great start with facts and then began to become more brief toward the middle and the end though.

Reading this nonfictional biography of Thomas Jefferson was an educational experience. Geared towards young adults, it highlights the major accomplishments and contradictions of Thomas Jefferson’s life. It starts by explaining his childhood; he was raised on a huge plantation quite dependent on slavery. This was important background for understanding later on in the book why it was so hard for him to get rid of his own slaves. The book captures many of Jefferson’s personal hobbies and interests that stayed with him throughout his life. While geared towards young adults, this biography had a lot of information. I found myself coming away from reading it still a little confused about all the ins and outs of Jefferson’s contributions, although I did gain a better general idea of what a great contribution to the country he made. I probably wouldn’t use the book as a class read because it is fairly lengthy and I didn’t feel it would necessarily capture the attention of those readers who aren’t already interested in learning about Jefferson. However, I might recommend the book for an individual read for a student eighth grade or higher. I feel like it gives a fairly balanced view of Jefferson, pointing out his weaknesses and hypocrisy, but also showing his great contribution to America. It makes him out to be a real person, which I thought was effective.
