April Book Report Louis Armstrong By: Gini Holland Louis Armstrong gave the US a new style of entertainment, and helped break segregation barriers for African Americans. Growing up, Armstrong didn't have a lot of money. He had to work for most of his childhood in order to provide for his family. Early on, he was introduced to soulful music. Armstrong and his friends would sing on a street corner for extra money after their work shifts. He fell in love with jazz, and began to make it into his own style. The main instrument he played was the cornet. Once Louis reached 17, he scored his first gig playing in front of a paying audience. Throughout his time playing he faced racial segregation, and had to endure many hardships because of it. Although, he paved the way for other African American musicians, and provided them with more musical freedom. In the end, Louis Armstrong would be remembered as an amazing musician and the 'Father of Jazz'. Louis Armstrong inspired many people with his music. First of all, he proved that African Americans were just as capable as anyone else to play music and become famous. Armstrong paved the way for African Americans, and gave them the confidence to follow their heart. He did this when he was playing and didn't stop, even when people started to discriminate against him. Secondly, he provided people with hope. He showed African Americans that it was possible to become famous and still do what you love. In the end, Louis Armstrong was an inspiration to everyone who heard him play.
