This is a very interesting book about Queen Elizabeth's life from the time she was born to the early 1980s when Prince William was born. She wasn’t born to be Queen; her father was the Duke of York who became king, as George VI, when Edward VIII abdicated. Her fsther rose to the occasion, as did she, pledging her life to the service of her country. She has never wavered from that pledge. There is much to admire about her. I enjoyed reading about her life growing up, as well as her romance with Philip, their lives as a young married couple and as parents. Many pages detailed the foreign trips she and Prince Philip took, often leaving their young children behind. Wow, the trips took a lot of stamina. She has spent her life dedicated to hard work, and her natural beauty, kindness and composure shines through. It was interesting to see a bit behind the public persona.

This was an insightful look at the life of the Queen up until the early 1980's. One gets a closer look at the inner workings of the m=monarchy at that time and is something all Royalists and Royal Watchers should read in order to get a better understanding of Queen Elizabeth II.
