Unlike his fairy collections, these tales are all "true" with some species descriptions coming from nature journals of the time and others being more personal memoir/anecdote type stories of individual's pets. Large portions are given over to the stories of animals owned by Alexandre Dumas as well as the artist Decamps. Additionally, I suppose it is a matter of course when writing about animals, but I noticed that a lot of these stories centered around death, even ones that didn't often ended with notes about how the featured animal died. |
Review # 2 was written on 2014-01-05 00:00:00 William Ayala Lang is known for compiling the Rainbow Fairy books, and that is what I expected this volume to be like, but all stories involving animals. Well, all the stories do involve animals, but most are true stories or even zoological observations. Interesting, but many were too sad or too dry for me. |
