I like this book because it is practical and covers a wide range of character types over the eras covered. She is particularly good in the range of male costume types depicted including uniforms and occupational clothes and there is also a full range of children's clothing. The chapter on design & construction would be helpful for the casual costume maker or little theatre wardrobe department. All the illustrations are line drawings but this makes it easier to focus on the clothing and each depiction has a helpful descriptive paragraph that discusses the fashion trends, historical context, hair styles and accessories as well as the design features of the style shown.

Raise your hand if you've heard of Victoria Woodhull before. I hadn't either. Turns out she was a spiritualist who connected Cornelius Vanderbilt with his dead mother. Also, she was the first woman to own a stock trading company and to run for President. Legendary abolitionist Frederick Douglass was nominated as her Vice President, for cryin' out loud! That's awesome! And yet, it took me 45 years to learn of her existence. Sure, Douglass declined the VP nomination, and Woodhull lost the election to Ulysses S. Grant. But c'mon. Woodhull deserves a better fate than near annihilation from our nation's collective memory. Amanda picked out A Woman for President: The Story of Victoria Woodhull as an empowering bed time read for our 5-year-old daughter. Siggy loved the read, including a few ooo's over Jane Dyer's bright watercolor illustrations. An educational and inspiring work of interest to parents and children alike.
