Review # 1 was written on 2007-11-17 00:00:00 Susanne Fjellseth Definitely well researched and timely. Especially timely. The sections on schooling in Yugoslavia and the Serbo-Croatian language are especially well done. The portions on Njegos and Mestrovic are also good. The final chapter is perhaps too speculative and fantastic for some (I know scholars who were enraged by it when the book first came out), as it basically poses the question, "What lesson does the violent collapse of a federally organized, multicultural state offer to the U.S. (as a federally organized multicultural state)?" This was when "multiculturalism" was being talked about more, and also criticized more. (Remember timely.) Still interesting to compare and, mostly, contrast. |
