Review # 1 was written on 2007-12-10 00:00:00 Beau Bridges Actually, I only partly read this and skimmed the rest. I purchased this book as I thought it would explore *how* poetry works as a potentially magical form & process but no such luck. In what I did read, the author retorts to other critics about whether Yeats and Pound are adequately occult in this way or that way or whether their devices were merely aesthetic ones. That is very interesting in itself but Materer bogged me down with too much detail too early. The chapter on H.D. (Hilda Dolittle) seemed promising but as I said I ended up skimming, being so disenchanted by the opening chapters. So, my review is not really a fair one. I imagine that with a different purpose I might pick this up again and appreciate it far more (if I were working on an essay for example). Perhaps best recommended as a reference text rather than to be read straight-through. |
Review # 2 was written on 2014-10-24 00:00:00 Mathew Dyck Very interesting study of modernist writers and their belief in the occult, and how their belief incorporated into their work. I didn't recognize all the names here, but I have the feeling I'll be coming back to this book with further study into modernism. |
