The first thing that has to be said is that this book is very outdated, as one would expect from anything written in 1979 with "contemporary" on its cover. Yet, from a historical perspective, it has undoubtedly a lot to offer! The book is divided in 11 short essays, each by a different author, but all focused on what I consider to be one of the most interesting periods of Japan: the first three decades of the post-war era. There are a few comments about the pre-war period, and even a little about pre-Meiji Japan, but only a tiny bit. The essays are titled as the following: Politics: #1 The Making of a Prime Minister #2 Parties, Factions and the Diet #3 The World of the Zaikai #4 The Bureaucracy: Japan's Pool of Leadership #5 Case Study: Foreign Policy à la LDP (The 1956 Soviet-Japanese Peace Agreement) Economics: #6 "Japan Inc.": Reality of Facade? #7 Behind the "Made in Japan" Label #8 Japan's Labor Unions: The Meeting of White and Blue Collar #9 Small Businesses #10 Agriculture #11 Case Study: How to Go Bankrupt and Still Stay Afloat (The Ataka Affair) This selection covers a very wide and interesting range of topics, mostly about Politics and Economics directly, but also a lot about culture and its interface with said Politics and Economics, at times even comparing the West with Japan -- essay #7 in particular has an interesting cultural approach to the Japanese economic miracle. On the other extreme, some essays are very technical and offer a wealth of graphs and tables, to the point that a non-economist (e.g. myself) has a hard time understanding what all those numbers really mean. Essay #9 above all others has this trait and it was somewhat hard to follow. Anyway, the variety of kinds of languages, points of view and focuses from an essay to another is very refreshing and makes the whole work very pleasant to read, in its vast majority (I'm still looking at you, essay #9 >.>) -- in my opinion it easily deserves 4 stars, closer to a 5 than a 3. To sum up, this book definitely added at lot to my knowledge of post-war Japan and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who felt attracted to the title! [Now, as the first and possibly last reader of this book on Goodreads, I can only wonder if anyone will ever read this review -- I suspect this book's authors feel/felt the same way]

The Holy, Inspired and inerrant word of God! I can say no more than READ IT! I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made. Who, for us men for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to judge the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of Life; who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets. And I believe one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. -The Nicene Creed
