I enjoyed this book. I don't read many novels, but this one fit me for sure since I sing folk music and am familiar with many of the old ballads referred to in the book. It expresses much of the way I feel about folk music and its interaction with modernity. I was introduced to Donald Davidson as a writer through reading his essay in the book "I'll Take My Stand" (by the way, Goodreads links to the wrong Donald Davidson). The story in "The Big Ballad Jamboree" revolves around similar themes as his essay in that book: art, its connection to people and their culture, and the different influences of commercialization and folk tradition upon music. I am close to giving the book five stars, but there are still a few things that bother me. While Christianity is referred to all over the book, I wish it had impacted the main characters a bit more. Cissie seemed to get a little too much influenced by modernity in college and has an independent edge that I wish had been resolved better (it is in conflict some with the folk culture she loves, so I think there was possibility of a better resolution). Over all the book was well written, enjoyable, insightful, colloquial, poetic, and lively. Some of the scenes are just plain beautiful, while others made me laugh out loud. It balanced well an appreciation of the folk roots of country music while recognizing its unhealthy elements, which I fear have greatly increased since the 1950s when the book was written. "But the more I thought, the more mixed up I felt. In those times we all sung for fun, not for pay, which is surely the way God meant it to be. You wouldn't ever have thought of hiring somebody to eat for you or make love for you." (p. 115)

A brilliant tsunami, razor-edged and driven by love.
