Very good book on the political thought of Thucydides, and only reinforces Hobbes' view that we read Thucydides to achive a greater understanding and clarity on fundamental questions of political life. The book investigates the connection between Periclean democracy and imperialism, as well as the problem of domestic and foreign tyranny. Specifically, Palmer examines what the Athenian understanding of their regime was compared to the Thucydidean understanding of that regime. He also looks at the Athenians' understanding of the relation of their regime at home to their empire, as well as the view of Thucydides of this relationship. Palmer does this in four chapters; in the first chapter Plamer examines the three speeches made by Pericles in support of empire as a way of upholding Athenian democracy. It is from Pericles' solution to Athens' political problems that the book gets its title. Pericles asserted that citizens must love the glory of their city, and through this love of glory, they must all sacrifice for the common good. This becomes problematic when examining the career of Alcibiades later in the book. The second chapter explores the beginning of Athenian imperialism through the lens of the Corinthian speech at Sparta, the debate on the fate of Mytilene, the Melian Dialogue and the debate at Camarina. The chapter also examines Athenian self-understanding and how they defended their imperialism. In chapter three, Palmer focuses on the careers of Alcibiades and Nicias and how these are related to Athenian tyranny. Palmer makes his case that Thucydides is not strictly a historian, nor did he see himself as a historian. Rather, Thucydides saw himself examining the biggest event of his generation through it's effects on the political life of the city-states involved.
