Quote from the book ('How to use this book'): "First of all, congratulations for having come this far! You are obviously very serious about learning Spanish." I haven't read the first book of the series (Colloquial Spanish), so I don't know whether the series as a whole is gentle enough for novice students. This book draws heavily from (I guess) original texts, thus the required vocabulary is rather wide. Grammar, on the other hand, is prescribed in sympathetically small doses. I just scanned this book fast to check whether I'd learn much in terms of grammars or idioms. Not really, but enough new words to chew and swallow before plunging to the real, colloquial world that is Spanish-speaking.

In a fit of educational frenzy I took Spanish at a college while I was a full time student at a university. Crazy, I know. This textbook was really helpful and fun to use. I remember comparing it to the American edition and I noticed that the Canadian edition is substantially shorter. I guess they expect more from Americans since it's French not Spanish that is our second language up here in the North. I'm not sure how much of it remained in my head. I remember though that it substantially increased my understanding of spoken Spanish (even if I couldn't really speak all that well myself) and I remember that it wasn't a particularly overbearing textbook, which helped!
