This book is a good insight to any professional that aims to understand better the trends, or companies that aim to incorporate trends into their marketing strategies. It is a very well informative book, quite useful to understand the functioning of trends and to be aware how to make the most use of the underestimated subject. The author reflects his experienced knowledge while being supported with other experienced professionals on the field. He emphasises that in the recent years, trend analysis has become more important than ever since the consumers have more power and it is more difficult to predict their behaviour. Therefore, even if the discipline is still not fully and formally established to other areas than fashion, and not considered to all the companies, he suggests that it should be a must since it is essential to survive as a business today. The author covers everything related about trend marketing, from starting point of understanding the trends to the final point of implementation. It has a detailed specification on theory and steps to follow how to best use the strategy of trend marketing. The book explains what trends are, what they do, how they drive consumer behaviours, how they affect companies, how they work, how they can be identified, analysed and used, the methodologies and procedures to follow, how they are classified, or how to fully implement them, among others. The author continuously mentions examples of relevant cases where it can be seen how trend marketing has been important through time and so the reader can relate the information. He also demonstrates through the book that trends are guided by social, cultural, economic, politic, technological and environmental phenomena. It cannot be stopped at will of few companies since it is a natural fluctuation of human needs.

The Next Big Thing is extremely thorough, with two sections (addressing both trends and the profession of trend marketing) and five parts (discussing the value of trends, beginning with trends, understanding trends, trend identification, trend interpretation, and implementation of trend-based knowledge). The Next Big Thing leaves one with a very clear understanding of what it takes to be a legitimate, effective, and accurate trend forecaster. More importantly, the book establishes a formal set of methods and terms to which professionals can refer. This is extremely important, for without basic standards, there are few ways to distinguish legitimate trend spotters and trend agencies from those which are less effective. With luck, The Next Big Thing will help the trend spotting industry rid itself of pretenders and hence its negative reputation.
