I wish I could give it four stars, because I learned a lot about an obscure but always colorful general and operations in Texas, the ultimate backwater of the Civil War. Prose though was awkward and some conclusions seemed arbitrary. Nearly 100 pages are spent on Magruder's pre-war career but his post war actions are given short service.

Hamilton was one of the founders of the nation. He also wanted to make sure that the national government was strong enough to lead the nation and he wanted Congress to have more powers. He also seemed to believe that only certain people should be allowed to have political influence, with himself included among them, of course. The book goes into his childhood, his involved with the Revolutionary War, and his work in the government after that war, along with his death during a duel (which was, in my opinion, a darn stupid way to settle a disagreement.) I get the impression that he might have been an elitist and a snob. Anyhow, it's an interesting book.
