Review # 1 was written on 2017-06-28 00:00:00 Scott Holsinger Juvenile delinquency is not a subject I'm all that interested in. I think Howell spends too much time on gangs (which are no where near the problem the media would have us think they are) and not enough on relating "gang" activity to regular juvenile delinquency. He's dry and that's probably at least somewhat related to the fact that reading textbooks is rarely fun. Having said that, I'm a fan of the "what works?" philosophy of criminal justice/criminological theory and I wish it were used more in terms of both crime and education. And fiscal policy, too, now that I think about it. I would only read this book if I had too, but I did, and so far I have an 'A' in this class, so take that for what it is. It's written to an undergrad level (also a problem, since this is a graduate class) so if you're looking for a text for your undergrad class, this would be a good one. 3.5 stars if I could, but since I can't I gave it 3.

Review # 2 was written on 2020-06-01 00:00:00 Michaela Brown Allman considers puzzling human behaviors and habits in light of anthropological research on human evolution. People who think a person is a blank slate with behaviors completely controlled by society and environment won't like this book, but I think behavior is dictated by some of both biology and environment, and so I found this book quite intriguing. A similar (longer) book has been written by Paul Ehrlich called Human Natures, that I haven't read yet.
