Personal reaction: I liked the variety of travels presented in this book. The book is humorous and features a combination of short poems and longer ones. I remember checking this book out of the library as a child and enjoying it. Children will love the layout of the book, with illustrations (though sometimes small) included with each poem. Purpose: This book would be an excellent read aloud for enjoyment and/or curricular purposes for first grades. Children in first grade are learning jokes and will find these pose hilarious. The book could also be used when teaching children about geography or traveling. The book is a collection so you can pick out ones that fit to your lessons. The poems are presented in various ways that keeps the book interesting. There is some vocabulary in the book that can be used (i.e. What do you think "foot slogging" is? Read the children the poem and then discuss their changes to their answers). The poems encourage imagination through description (i.e. The Squidgeree).

This poetry book is filled with goofy poems. I liked the nonsense filled book, and think kids would really like them too. Purpose Read aloud for enrichment Students would enjoy how light hearted this poetry book is, especially since most students expect poetry to be boring. There are also lots of different topics the poetry is written about. This would allow for many different reasons to read them. There is one about love letters that can be read around valentines day, and one that is about cheering up when your sad. The vocabulary in this book varies in each poem, so this book could be for a wide range of students. I'd say 1st grade to 4th.Some of the vocabulary is nincompoop, overjoyed and momentous. Read aloud for curricular purposes: This book would be a great intro to poetry because it is so fun and children would have a blast hearing such funny poetry and looking at the fabulous illustrations.
